What Is Functional Capacity Evaluation or FCE?

The American Occupational Therapy Association defines Functional Capacity Evaluation (FCE) as a means of evaluating an individual’s capacity to perform work activities related to their employment. The process of FCE involves comparing a person’s state of health and body function capabilities to the demands of the job.

The Functional Capacity Test for Workers Compensation is administered in order to determine an employees ability to return to their original job or to another role within the company. Sometimes, the results of the FCE will advise the individual to seek a new job or need for additional medical care.

People are usually advised to take a Functional Capacity Test for workers compensation by physicians, nurse practitioners and other medical practitioners, employers or human resources personnel. FCE’s are covered and paid for by workers’ compensation insurance and involve several meetings with the health practitioner who will refer the patient to an FCE Technician, who is trained and qualified to make the assessments.

One of the challenges of this process is of course, medical scheduling – for testing, assessment, clinic visits, documentation and paperwork. It is a tedious task for the case manager, employer, claims adjuster, or risk manager.
